A bridge too far
Network Rail has confirmed this morning that Newbury’s old footbridge will start to disappear in just over four weeks’ time.
The old bridge, located close to the booking office and entrances, will cease to be used once the new white bridge at the western end of the platform is open.
According to Network Rail the new bridge, with its lift access, will be operational from Monday 5 March.
The old bridge will start to be removed over the weekend of 17 and 18 March.
Graeme Tandy, Route Delivery Manager for Network Rail said: “The new footbridge at Newbury will deliver benefits to everyone who uses the station. The new bridge features new stairs and a lift, allowing those with wheelchairs, pushchairs and luggage to get to and from the platforms safely.
“By moving the footbridge we will able to install electrical equipment, allowing bigger, cleaner and quicker trains to serve Newbury station.”
