CCTV turn off sees crime go up
Stats from Thames Valley Police have shown that since Newbury Town Centre's CCTV system was turned off in April 2016, the number of crimes taking place in that area rose.
The news comes just as it was revealed that Newbury Bid will be putting the CCTV back online in March, a year after it was switched off due to cost cutting measures by West Berkshire Council.
While the number of crimes that took place in Newbury Town Centre in April 2016 was 97, that figure rose to a peak of 136 incidents in July, August and October 2016.
The most common offence taking place was anti-social behaviour with 273 incidents over the year, closely followed by violence and sexual offences.
