Discounted town centre parking for residents dismissed
A discounted parking scheme for residents in Newbury who shop or do business in the town centre has been dismissed by West Berkshire Council.
The scheme, which has become popular in several other local authorities, sees residents given a reduced rate when they park in council owned car parks.
Despite the benefits in supporting residents and encouraging more people to use local businesses, Council bosses said the idea would be expensive to introduce.
Head of West Berkshire's Highways and Transport Department, Mark Edwards, added: "This would be difficult logistically because of all the variations on tariffs at the pay machines and would involve additional costs to the council to introduce and enforce. It would also result in a loss of income that the council cannot afford to bear at a time when it is looking to increase revenue."
