Does Wau have the wow factor?
After several false starts Newbury finally got its newest Malaysian restaurant in the form of Wau.
Opened last month, the eatery opposite the Kennet Centre has occupied a prime spot ahead of the retail centre's redevelopment.
Greeted by a warm Malaysian smile, we were ushered to our table and advised that were to order Nandos style at the bar.
The menu offers a mix of both dishes that roll off the tongue as well as some not so familiar delights.
Although the menu has what you would consider starters and mains, each of the dishes arrive as soon as they are ready allowing you to pick from each others plates as they hit the table.
Opting for a chicken satay, the generous portion with a healthy serving of peanut sauce was a great starter. The tender chicken set the standard for the rest of the meal.
For mains we opted for both a prawn noodle stir fry and a chicken nasi goreng which had just the right amount of spice.
The biggest surprise was the small fish heads that sat on top of the rice dish.
Wau is a new gem in the heart of Newbury, bringing informal dining with an eastern twist and Malaysian warmth at a really family friendly price.
