Fine for SSE after roadwork chaos
Utility firm SSE has been fined after roadworks caused traffic chaos in Newbury earlier this year.
West Berkshire Council prosecuted the company for breaching its work permit and at Reading Magistrates Court the company was fined £1,666.67 and ordered to pay costs of £2,218.50 and a £166 surcharge.
The roadworks caused significant congestion around London Road and Parkway. As well as motorists being stuck in traffic, weekend shoppers reported taking two hours to leave the Parkway Shopping Centre car park and bus services were unable to operate their usual timetables.
West Berks said: "On this occasion we set conditions which were not met and the result was disruption for Newbury residents and businesses. Given the scale of the disruption caused we felt it necessary to prosecute SSE for failing to comply with conditions of their permit."
