Food review: Nelsons Diner

The pink Nelsons Diner Cadillac has finally made its way up the road from Kingsclere to its new location in the Kennet Centre. Located next to Nandos, Nelsons has long been rumoured to be opening in Newbury, but it wasn't until late last year after a few delays that the ovens were fired-up and the juke box finally started playing. The diner brings that all American vibe to what feels like a forgotten alleyway within the shopping centre. Only the rollerskates and a rusty Ford sign were missing in this Detroit of Newbury. And while the Kennet Centre may not be the hub of all things culinary in Newbury, the diner opening is another step in the right direction. Arriving on a cold and wet Sunday morning I was greeted by Heidhi (sp) who was eager to share her Nelsons enthusiasm and show me to my table. Passing a swathe a booths, bar and open cooking area. Sat down at my table I was amazed by the variety on offer during their breakfast service that runs from opening through until midday. There is the caveat that if there is breakfast food left they will serve it. I pitched for the All Day Breakfast at £8.50 that was made up of hash browns, tomatoes, two sausages, toast as well as both eggs and bacon. What struck me about ordering was the unusual question of what kind of bacon I would like. Usually when I'm shopping it's either Danepack or Tesco own brand, but here I'd to quickly decide between streaky or back bacon. It was an unusual question and not one I think I'd had before. But it did make me think how personal they were trying to make each breakfast. The breakfast itself was a sold affair. It brought together the best of the dry breakfast food options taking away any worry of a beans flood. While it didn't use the world's finest ingredients, it certainly wasn't bottom of the barrel stuff. The sausages had a nice peppery kick and the bacon had been cooked fresh rather than sitting on the hotplate firming up. With its lively atmosphere, friendly staff and good value for money ethos, Nelsons Diner is definitely on the list to return to for some pre-drinks food with their daytime menu with mates.
