Friendly sessions for people living with Dementia and their carers at the Corn Exchange

There’s a warm welcome for people living with dementia, their carers and families at the Corn Exchange Newbury’s Memory Café - a free, monthly, informal morning of tea, coffee, cake and arts activities.

Held at the Corn Exchange’s Balcony Bar, Memory Café is a place where people living with dementia, their carers and families can interact, find support, share concerns, celebrate and take part in arts activities in a comfortable environment. Held on the third Monday of each month from 10.30am to midday, there is a new activity led by a professional artist, with the aim being to stimulate the brain and encourage conversation.

Upcoming monthly sessions this autumn include piano by Trevor Defferd (21 Oct), creative movement and chair based dance with Natalie Watson (18 Nov) and classical guitar by Fernando Aguera (16 Dec).

Other activities planned for 2020 include Intergenerational Music (20 Jan), recorder trio Caroline Woodhouse, Hayley Sherlock and Sophie Ream (16 Mar), piano and singalong songs with James Baker (18 May) and flute and guitar music by Cathy Laney and Jack Rowe (15 Jun).

Gamma, a leading supplier of voice, data and mobile products and services in the UK, is a corporate partner and supporter of the Corn Exchange Newbury’s Memory Café. Akua Richardson, HR Manager at Gamma commented: ‘Gamma is delighted to help support the Corn Exchange’s Memory Café in Newbury. The Corn Exchange sits at the heart of our town and we were truly inspired to discover the innovative programmes they offer to the wider community, making a big difference to the people they touch. Becoming involved with the Memory Café allows us to contribute to that endeavour and give something back to the community in which we work.’

Hannah Elder, Engagement Manager at the Corn Exchange Newbury, says, ‘Memory Café is a space where we hope that those living with dementia, and their carers, can enjoy time out together. It’s a place for conversation, and shared experiences, alongside all the tea and cake you can manage!’

Memory Café is at the Corn Exchange Newbury on Monday 21 October, 18 November & 16 December from 10.30am to 12pm. Sessions are free and booking is not required. For more information visit www.cornexchangenew.com or call the Corn Exchange on 01635 582 666.
