Huge drop in crime during lockdown

Reported crime in Newbury Town Centre dropped by 50% during lockdown.

During April this year the number of crimes recorded in the Town Centre was 48 according to Police.UK data. That compares to 95 reported cases during the previous month and a staggering 142 in January this year.

Despite the majority of the shops being closed, there were eight reported shopping thefts.

A map of reported crimes suggests the majority of the those were in Sainsburys.

As well as shopping thefts, the other main crimes were:

  • 15 Violence and sexual offences

  • 10 Anti-social behaviour

  • 5 Public order
