Iceland snaps up Poundworld stores - but not Newbury
There has been another blow to any hopes of Iceland re-opening in Newbury.
Despite the chain snapping up a number of Poundworld stores across the country after the discount retailer closed earlier in the summer, Iceland has said the Newbury store wasn’t one of them.
The retail publication, the Grocer, yesterday revealed that Iceland plans to turn 15 Poundworld stores into Iceland outlets, with four to be converted into the Food Warehouse.
Keith Hann, Director of Corporate Affairs at Iceland, responded to our question about whether the Newbury Retail Park store was among those bought: “This is not one of the stores we have agreed to acquire.”
Meanwhile work is cracking on to demolish the former Iceland store on Bartholomew Street. A developer is looking to build a later-living scheme there.
