Industry experts worry about John Lewis Newbury
Industry experts have warned John Lewis in Newbury could be among a list of stores earmarked for closure.
Earlier this week the chain announced that many jobs could be lost and that a number of stores could close.
The Guardian reports "The shops likely to close were not named but industry insiders said those being considered for closure included Watford, Newcastle and Newbury. John Lewis said details would be shared with staff by the middle of July."
Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Newbury Lee Dillon said: "It is disappointing to see the Newbury John Lewis being mentioned for closure. Major brands and independent stores are both needed to maintain a healthy high street. If the store doesn't reopen then we need to ensure that the Partners are supported with finding new roles and we need to work with the landlord to make the best of use of the space in a key location within Newbury Town Centre."
The John Lewis store in the Parkway is among an increasingly small number of the outlet's shops that have not reopened post retail lockdown.
There is no information in the public domain as to when that store will open.
