More free parking ideas being explored
Free parking was once again on the agenda at a meeting last night for Newbury Town Councillors.
The latest idea being looked at is being driven by Newbury Business Improvement District (BID).
They are exploring the model used by Basingstoke and Deane Council where a number of car parks are free for the first hour.
Car park users who stay more than one hour pay will pay for a ticket that will cover them for two hours.
For example, if they parked for 58 mins it would be free. If they parked for 1 hour and 25 mins, they would be charged the one to two hour parking rate. In Basingstoke that would cost £2.10.
Melissa Hughes, CEO of Newbury BID, spoke about the idea in the meeting. She highlighted the importance of ensuring that West Berkshire Council continued to secure income from the car parking to fund essential services.
