Narrow Boat might not be sinking just yet
A West Berkshire Councillor is making efforts to make it harder for developers who are looking to redevelop a former pub site on London Road.
In June, a planning application was submitted, that aimed to demolish the Narrow Boat pub and replace it with a retail unit.
Now though, Councillor Jeff Beck, has 'called in' the planning application. According to the Local Government Ombudsman, applications which might be controversial or impact on sensitive local issues can be decided in a more open forum instead of it being made by a Planning Officer.
The Councillor argues that an entrepreneurial operator could re-open the site that is adjacent to the canal and "the creation of as many as 300 apartments at the Newbury Business Park" soon. There is also an argument once again that the new store could have a negative impact on Newbury Town Centre.
Others, including representatives at the Parkway and Kennet Centre, have also objected to the plans.
