New Lidl to replace Narrow Boat pub site
A brand new Lidl is going to be built at the site of the former Narrow Boat pub on London Road.
The proposed new store, with 110 parking spaces, will also see demolition of the pub and Bargain Buys unit, which according to planning documents has been under performing. It will be the chain's second outlet in the Town, with the transformation of the former Homebase at Newbury Retail Park ongoing.
Documents sent to West Berkshire Council show that the new store at the Narrow Boat pub will replace the existing Lidl on London Road. It states: "The intention is for Lidl to relocate from their existing out-of-centre premises on London Road. Lidl’s existing lease at their London Road store is soon to expire. This store is compromised in terms of the offer that can be provided and its operational constraints. The existing Lidl is too small to meet the modern operator requirements of Lidl and the range and offer now expected by its customers."
Home Bargains were looking to develop the site, but pulled out after a planning application had been submitted.
