New World War Two Exhibition to Open at Greenham Control Tower
Next Thursday 6th June sees the launch of a new month-long exhibition at Greenham Control Tower covering the airfield’s role in the European theatre of World War Two amid the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
Entitled Three Momentous Years, the exhibition will feature a display of rare photographs of the active role US airmen and soldiers played when the airfield operated between 1942 and 1945.
Jonathan Sayers, a Director at Greenham Control Tower said: “This exiting new exhibition is the next in our programme of themed displays. Our volunteers have dedicated much time and effort into bringing out just why Greenham Common mattered so much to the war effort against the Third Reich. Visitors to the Control Tower will be able to learn the inside story of what happened before, during and after D-Day at Greenham as well as being able to see some historic artefacts, paintings and photos from the time which we will have on display.
"This will be a great chance to get to understand what was here at this site that played a part in the liberation of Western Europe in 1944-45 and how the base formed part of both local and international history.”
The Three Momentous Years Exhibition will run from 6th June- 7th July 2019 and entry is free. Greenham Control Tower is open Thursdays & Fridays 10.30 – 13.30 and on Saturdays & Sundays 9.30 – 16.00.
