Newbury man jailed for assault

Following an investigation by Thames Valley Police, a man has been jailed for assaulting a man in Newbury. Ben Thompson, aged 20, of Hawthorn Road, Newbury, was jailed for a year at Reading Crown Court on Friday. He was also ordered to pay a fine of £140. At a previous court hearing Thompson pleaded guilty to one count of grievous bodily harm. Thompson assaulted the victim, a 23-year-old man, in Market Place outside the Slug and Lettuce pub in the early hours of Sunday 15 January last year. Thompson kicked and punched the victim before running off. The victim suffered a broken jaw and has had to undergo surgery. Investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Gareth Perry of Force CID based at Newbury police station, said: “Such violence will not be tolerated in Newbury and our thorough investigation into this offence demonstrates that offenders will be caught and dealt with through the courts.”
