The Empty Nesters' Club at the Corn Exchange
Modern comedy play, The Empty Nesters’ Club! by John Godber will come to the Corn Exchange, Newbury on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 April, offering a humorous yet poignant look at what befalls parents after their children have outgrown the family home, and the onset of so called ‘empty nest syndrome’.
Presented by The John Godber Company and Theatre Royal Wakefield, this brand new play by BAFTA Award-winning playwright John Godber will strike a chord with any parents whose children have flown the nest, and indeed with the kids who flew.
Newly bereft mum Vicky Barret, whose daughter has recently left for university in London, prepares for the inaugural meeting of her new support group – the titular Empty Nesters’ Club – by reflecting on the upheaval of letting go of her not-so-little girl.
Together with her husband Phil, Vicky shares the familiar story of empty bedrooms, fresher’s flu, boyfriends, long goodbyes, motorway service stations and trips to Ikea; and how she fought her way back to being the woman she is today – exhausted!
John Godber is one of the UK’s most famous playwrights, having penned international hits such as Bouncers, Teechers and Shafted!. Well known for his observational comedy dramas, which are often based on real life situations, Godber admits to using his and his wife’s own experiences as their two daughters left home, as inspiration for The Empty Nesters’ Club!
Humorous, touching and completely relatable, The Empty Nesters’ Club! comes to the Corn Exchange, Newbury, on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 March, 7.45pm. Tickets cost £16 (£14 concessions). To book visit the Corn Exchange website www.cornexchangenew.comor call the Box Office on 0845 5218 218
