Travellers pitch up in Victoria Park
Last night members of the travelling community pitched up in the 'Jewel in the Crown' of Newbury Town Council - Victoria Park.
First reports of the encampment were around 9pm with caravans and cars seen entering the park by St Mary's Road.
Cllr Miles Evans from was quick to respond on Twitter saying: "Case has been logged and officers are at the scene. Have asked for everything to be done to return park to normal ASAP."
Mayor Margo Payne added: "Devastated at the damage done to our jewel Victoria Park. Only last weekend volunteers were planting shrubs to help our aim for entering Britain in Bloom. If you see any damage being done pls report it!"
This morning there appears to be no sign of any movement by the Police or the travellers, although it has been reported that an order has been issued for them to leave by 2pm today.
MP Richard Benyon said: "Terrible traveller incursion onto Victoria Park. Speedy response by @TVP_WestBerks and @WestBerkshire and @MilesWEvans . I have spoken to Police Area Commander. Criminal damage = criminal investigation underway.
"Outrageous desecration of a much loved green open space at the heart of our town. Glad criminal investigation underway. Hope collars get felt.*
